In the wake of the catastrophic devastation inflicted by Cyclone Idai, African Parks deployed a team from Bazaruto Archipelago National Park to support relief efforts around the Buzi river, west of Beira. As flood waters have started to recede major international aid groups have stepped up efforts in areas with large concentrations of people and it is evident that humanitarian needs are likely to deepen over the weeks and months ahead. The loss of life has been heavy, and it is estimated that more than half a million people have been affected. An unprecedented humanitarian crisis evolved, as winds of up to 170 km per hour, heavy rains and floods consumed 3,000 square kilometres of densely populated landscape. ![]() Mozambique has declared a state of emergency following the devastation wreaked by the strong Category 2 Cyclone Idai, which made landfall near Beira, its second largest port, on the 14th of March.
